‘Pie hole’, colloquial for one’s mouth, is believed to have evolved in the USA in the 1980s from the British expression ‘cake hole’ (coined in the mid 20th century). Pie hole refers to a mouth, as in: Shut your pie hole or, in this case: Put less in your pie hole.

Mission Improbable: Put Less in Your Pie Hole

Throughout the duration of my Master’s degree, I saw numerous patients in and out of hospitals, met an abundance of dietitians, conversed with intelligent lecturers and students, read a myriad of articles, wrote countless assignments, participated in a multitude of nutrition-related debates (or arguments)… all this culminated in a nice piece of paper, a long ceremony and a few unwavering opinions.

I could launch into the typical ‘there are five food groups, eat plenty of fruit and vegetables etc etc’ – 1) dairy 2) grains/rice /bread 3) meat/meat alternatives, 4) vegetables/legumes and 5) fruit – just in case you were wondering. But I don’t want to preach.

Everyone knows which foods they should put more of in their pie hole, and which ones to put less. Why write more on what you already know?

Finally, you may be wondering why the name “Put Less in Your Pie Hole”. I previously said ‘no’ to preaching. Instead, I am going to introduce the straightforward idea, one of my unwavering opinions, put less in your pie hole. The premise of the philosophy “put less in your pie hole” is just that. Eat all foods (unless there’s a medical reason not to), just eat them in moderation. Simple, right? Well, that’s the point… that and to see how many times I could shovel in the phrase “put less in your pie hole” (pun intended).

Shove THIS in Your Pie Hole

Welcome to Pie Hole Blogger, a blog about nutrition in all its glory, including: nutrition in the media, nutrition myths, weird and wacko diets and other nutrition issues. As an Accredited Practicing Dietitan (APD, Australia) and Accredited Nutritionist (AN, Australia) recently moved to the US, I’ve been reading plenty about the above.

From that angle, Pie Hole Blogger articles are written using reputable research articles and websites, not the likes of wikipedia or other .com sites. Given my enjoyment for reading and reviewing interesting research with a dietetic brain, I will do my best to bring some flare and flamboyance to my writing to ensure it’s not as dry and unpalatable as my dad’s BBQ steak.

In 25 words or less, what’s a dietitian? 
A credentialed/certified nutrition expert who is a university-qualified professional continually participating in training and education.
What do Dietitans do?

Commonly thought of as ‘food police’ or ‘food prudes’ (a term coined by my husband), only a small part of ‘dietitian-ing’ is weight loss related. Indeed, dietetics is the medical application of nutrition – more on this below. Dietitians can work in hospitals, aged care facilities, community health, food service, food and medical nutrition industry, private practice, government, research and more.

How are they different to a nutritionist?

All dietitians can call themselves nutritionists (as part of being an APD in Australia, you are also an AN – as I mentioned about myself) but not all nutritionists are dietitians. Dietitians must undergo an amount of medical training including supervised training in hospitals – remember, medical application of nutrition. Dietitians use food as ‘Medical Nutrition Therapy’ to manage health conditions and diseases.

So, me in a nutshell (mmm nuts)… ok, in 25 words or less: dietitian who loves food, cooking, talking about food, doesn’t believe in diets (actually hates that word), eats chocolate and subscribes to the philosophy ‘just put less in your pie hole’. Ok so that was 30 words, but the philosophy was seven words.
